The Beginner Green Smoothie

 Friday, August 20, 2010

I have to admit that the idea of drinking something green really doesn't appeal to me.  So, when I was given a green smoothie to try for breakfast recently, I was hesitant to say the least.  Visually, I wasn't sure I could get past the idea of drinking something green.  But, my kids were with me and we all  decided to try it at the same time (it was like a "dare" or "challenge").

The green smoothie had pineapple, banana, spinach, and ginger in it.  From what I had read, this smoothie would qualify as a "beginner" green smoothie since spinach is very mild in taste compared to other green vegetables, like kale.
"Not sure I want to do this"

The trick to a "beginner" green smoothie is to mix a mild green vegetable with your favorite fruits.  Spinach and romaine lettuce are good beginner greens.  Although the drink will certainly be green, the taste will be fruity, and you won't even be able to taste the green vegetables.
"Mmm Not bad!"
Surprisingly, my kids actually liked it and so did I.  I'm not sure I could drink a big glass of a green smoothie, yet, but it's a start.

Green smoothies are a great way to get an arsenal of phytochemicals all in a glass. If you want to make a super antioxidant smoothie, try blueberries, spinach, and banana.

Beginner Green Smoothie

1 banana
1/2 cup pineapple
1 cup spinach leaves
1/2 teaspoon grated ginger
ice, to reach desired consistency

Blend until smooth.
